Three Chimneys Inn & Ffrost Sawyer Tavern

We dinned upstairs and it was a fabulous meal! I started with a maple walnut old fashion, had the haddock in the potato crust (so yummy and comforting on a snowy winter's night) and finished with their brownie sundae which was huge and very shareable! The service was excellent and I even got a history lesson- it was a wonderful meal. Very classically historic and charming spot in Durham, NH!

We had a reservation for a group of 15 people to celebrate a birthday and were extremely disappointed with how the evening turned out. The restaurant seated us in a small room with low ceilings and three other two-top tables ... not ideal for a large group. While we were laughing and enjoying ourselves (we were in no way being rude or disrespectful), the manager aggressively came up to our table and rudely told us that our laughter and fun were “making them lose business.” and as he walked away he scoffed loud enough for all of us to hear him. It was shocking and completely uncalled for. Our server, however, was beyond kind and accommodating. The inn is a historical landmark in the center of Durham. The location is great and the building and grounds are beautiful. We found the inn staff friendly and welcoming. We had dinner at the tavern which was good. However, our dog-friendly room was in a dark basement at the back of the property. The beds were very creaky and we found that in the early morning our room did not have hot water. That was fixed after a call to the front desk. The included breakfast was the most basic I have ever had in a hotel or inn. Just coffee and plain bagels individually packaged in a ziploc bag. It wouldn't be much more trouble to provide some fresh fruit and cereals, or even scrambled eggs. This inn could be a destination with minimal investment.

What a great time dining at this Inn. Our server, Romaine, was pleasant and helpful in describing some menu options. Food prep was superb and portions were generous. She also shared information about the house and its history. Look forward to returning soon.
