The Smith House Historic Inn and Restaurant

First time eating there in many years. My expectations were high but was disappointed in the staff. It was nice that they offer an alternative menu considered as take out and at a reasonale price. I for one cannot eat a lot of food for medical reasons chose that option. I was informed that ordering from this menu would not include seconds or refills and would be served as takeout but dining in would be in a separate room. We felt like outcasts because we were part of a larger group. The food was good but the mood was cold.

This was a good place to stay. The room was clean and spacious. The mattress was a bit uncomfortable for our liking but we did have a great stay. The location is fantastic just steps from downtown square. Highly recommend it. The restaurant is fantastic, the food was delicious, everything hot and great portions served home style and the service was excellent. Highly recommend going to this restaurant.

Having been to the Smith House several times in the last 50 years, I took some friends expecting to receive the same level of service as in the past. Boy, was I wrong!?|After ordering and paying at the reception desk in a cumbersome manner, we were ushered into an empty room, sparsely decorated with cheap tables and chairs. The meals arrived on plastic plates, with plastic knives and forks and drinks in polystyrene cups. The tiniest chicken thighs were overcooked with inedible scorched skin. The veggies were partly heated in a microwave. I have had better tv dinners. Truly, an awful experience.

The Smith House is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. From the moment you arrive, you’re met with that classic Southern charm—warm hospitality, welcoming smiles, and an atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a piece of history. The charm of the building itself adds so much to the experience. There’s something special about the cozy rooms, the history in the walls, and the peaceful setting that makes your visit feel meaningful and memorable. The staff is wonderful—friendly, attentive, and genuinely invested in making sure every guest feels cared for. If you’re looking for Southern comfort, welcoming service, and a truly unique atmosphere, The Smith House is a must. A solid 5/5 experience!

This review is specifically for the Thanksgiving dinner at the Smith House! I’ve been here for other meals and they were delicious, but we just went to the Thanksgiving feast and I wanted to review that for other people who were curious about the experience. We parked behind the Smith House, down the hill and on the UNG campus. There’s a whole lot of parking over there on Thanksgiving because all the kids are gone for the holiday. Then, we walked back up the hill to the restaurant. They do not take reservations for Thanksgiving and they will be BUSY. Please know, that means you are going to have quite a wait!
