One of my family’s favorite places on Earth! So serene, such abundant wildlife and ever so very peaceful. Bears 🐻 do live there, as do deer and fox, elk and 🫎 moose. If you’re lucky you’ll see a few. We’ve stayed in tents and stayed in an RV. Both are great! Some things to think about if it’s not an area you’re familiar with. There’s no running water, pit toilets provided. Keep all “smelly” things locked away, such as perfumes and all types of food. Never go to sleep in a tent with food. Critters can smell VERY WELL! We just kept those things in the car or trunk.(All food in the trunk.) Excellent place to disconnect and actually TALK to your family! We loved watching the sunrise Down the mountain and sunset Up the mountain!! ⛰️ We hiked trails, did some fishing 🎣 in the creek, and warmed u
Great campsite! We stayed in the disperse camping so it was free. Beautiful landscape right outside our tent every morning. The one hike we went on was beautiful but we didn't take enough water to get all the way to the top. Wasn't too difficult to get to a scenic overlook. Great place to stay and explore.
Went through here on our way up into the West Elks in May. Was hiking up to Bonfisk via the Coal Mesa Trail. Gate was closed further down the road so we had to hike along the road but was so worth it for the peace and quiet the closed campground offered for our hike. Great place to camp too, I camped here last year at one of the tent sites. Definitely one of my favorites in the valley, takes about 45 minutes to an hour to get here from Gunnison.
Road to campground is 9 miles off the paved road. The first 7 is oiled road base, the last 2 is gravel. Honestly, the road is in way better condition than I70. Campground is beautiful. Cash needed to pay the $16/night fee. Vault toilets are clean. 21 sites. About 6 are pull throughs. Another 6ish are walk-in tent sites. Spot 11 is a pull through with the only true river front for an RV. Currently it isn’t available bc the river has cut out under the fire pit. Spot 17 is also a pull through with the best views of the cliffs and good shade. Lots of flys and mosquitoes so bring your deet. Also saw one tick. No firewood for sale.
Beautiful spot off of the beating path, a d not too far out of town for a quick getaway. Can be busy with campers, but if it's timed right, it can be minimally occupied. 👍👍
