Petersburg Campground

Great park. Of course at the moment only half of the campground is open due to hurricane Helena. Lots of trees are gone. And the lake is about 10 feet low. It's January now. So don't know if this is normal. Regardless still a great park. Play area and swimming beach. Bathroom are clean and usable. About 40 minutes from augusta. Very spacious sites. There's also a boat launch. M

Lots of damage from the hurricane. Not nearly as much shade and the bathroom (for the open section) has a tarp over it for the time being. (The bathrooms are older and not the highlight of the campground, but we use our RV) The limited number of sites that have been re-opened are in good shape. The roads have been recently paved and as with most of the campgrounds on the lake, a nice roomy place to stay. There is 50 amp, 30 and 120 at the boxes. Water, but no sewer.

We spent 4 nights at Petersburg Campground. It is very well maintained. In August it's very hot so the lake was quite refreshing. Took along our SUP and small kayak. Sites were clean and most seem quite level. Bathrooms were older, but clean. It would have been nice to have a box fan in bath house to get some air moving. This campground connects directly to the Bartrum Trail for hiking or mountain biking. Nice trail and not too much climbing. We will return.

I'm leaving an average review only because this once beautiful campground has been decimated by Hurricane Helene. We visited in late November 2025 because we were camping nearby and had reservations for March 2026. Although the volunteers and staff have done an outstanding job in reopening parts of this campground, the trees and vegetation are gone and the stumps and downed trees remain on the ground. There is no privacy between sites and if you don't mind seeing everything your neighbors are doing then no problem, but if you like a bit of privacy and in-the-woods feel, that no longer exists. Sadly, it will be years before this area reclaims its wild beauty. But on the bright side, the lake is still there for boating and fishing. FYI, we went to check out Modoc too but it was still clos

OMG! NO ONE ANSWERS PHONE!! Booking online warns you that you must arrive by 10 or have a gate code. They do not provide it in the confirmation email. We knew we were going to be arriving after the gate closed. We tried to call the campground. They never answered all day. We called the 800 rec.gov number and they didn’t have the code!!! WHAT A STRESSFUL NIGHTMARE!!! We drive straight through from our previous destination without stopping to eat to make sure we made it. Drove in at 9:45! And guess what? THERE WAS NO GATE!!!! All the stress and worry they caused me. I am so angry. They need to take the warning down on the website. I am seething angry, I have no idea about the facility itself. Maybe I will add to the review when i calm down.
