Magnuson Hotel Commerce

This hotel was obviously once beautiful, but it has fallen into disrepair. The carpeting in the elevators is disgusting. The furniture in all the rooms is scratched, stained, or has holes. And we had to move three different times, b/c one room smelled like weed--badly. The second had a musty, smoky, smell, and the third that we ended up taking, we found out after settling in, the TV didn't work, nor did the A/C/heater. It kept shutting off, no matter what. Couldn't call front desk b/c they had transferred it to an answering machine. Just terrible. Breakfast was ok, and the lady at the desk was very nice. But minimal towels (2 bath towels in a double rm), is crazy. I think if this place was bought by a bigger chain they could get it in shape. But these ppl are spending bare minim

I would have expected better for what we paid. I have sensitivities to cleaning products which have never been an issue at other hotels, but the strong odors of the products used here were not pleasant. The mattress was firm on the edges and soft in the middle (like the mattress had been used for a long time and springs and/or padding had gotten compressed), making it harder to get out of bed than it should have been. Sheets were a little scratchy. A/C left the room on the humid side and had to be turned down to 65° to keep the room cool. Our kiddo is a freshman in the band at ETAMU, and while I would much prefer to stay in Commerce when we come for games and performances, I’m thinking we are going to have to move to Greenville for more comfortable accommodations. Positive: Location Negative: It was obvious that people had been smoking in the room. The heat/air ran either freezing cold or very hot.

I really want to love this hotel because of its location next to ETAMU where our youngest child is a freshman in the band and we go to all the home games and special events. While this definitely has location, location, location for a university-oriented family, it can’t overcome the condition of the hotel. The people who work there are very nice. But the rooms are in some serious need of repair and upgrade. We were last there on Oct 11-12, 2025 in Room 224. We had a broken lamp, scratched TV screen, stained and scratched furniture. I appreciate that the rooms no longer have carpeted floors, but the carpeting in the elevator and hallways is stained and pretty gross. I personally would not recommend staying here. The property felt very run-down — there were drips/crusted residue on walls and counters, and several pieces of furniture (dressers, TV stand) showed visible damage. The biggest issue was billing: we stayed 2 nights but were charged for 6, and getting a refund has been very difficult so far. I’ve contacted corporate to try to resolve it. Upon sharing my photos and concerns, I was told there was a 2 hour policy for refunds. I had expressed wanting to speak with a manager and was told they were not available and I would have to wait until Monday. I did request a copy of the 2 hour policy and have yet to be provided with it. This is ongoing. I’d strongly suggest researching recent reviews before booking.
