When your website says you should be open then you should be open. We talked the forest rangers and they said the problem was with concessionaire. Still, no excuse. and then to have everything gated off or posted no camping is unacceptable. Weather was good and no snow around should mean campgrounds should be not gated closed. We TRIED to stay here May 2025.
Public day use area at entrance, campground down the road. Looks off-season, sign says donations accepted but not charging per night. 14 day limit. Has a few small bathrooms that are open and clean. Plenty of water spigots but none working. Dumpster near entrance but has been full for over a week. Spots are well spaced out among nice shade trees & road is smooth and good for any size rig. Some pull through sites available. No camp host on site currently. Lake has small tackle shop with snacks. High elevation, windy & even got a few inches of snow late April. Low use for now, maybe 3-4 other campers here. Super quiet at night with good views of the sky. Saw elk & tons of cool birds.
Solitude and beauty. I stayed here for two nights in October. Ron was one of the friendliest campground hosts I’ve met, and the couple that took the site across from me were just as nice. A short walk to the lake, and peace and quiet is in large supply. A special place. If you walk to the lake from the campground through the gate in the fence, watch for cow patties.
A well-maintained campground near Alpine, Arizona. Unfortunately, the lake had a algae bloom which made it impossible to kayak or fish. Other than that. It was a great place. This campground was not right next to the lake.
Pluses: Nice scenery The hosts are very friendly. Cool mountain climate in summer Campsites nicely spaced Potable water faucet next to clean pit toilet restrooms. (Not to fill your RV tanks.) Short walk to the lake down an easy trail. Minuses: Most campsites are way out of level with little level ground even for chairs and tables. Picnic tables are completely rotted and unusable. No on-site dump facility. Nearest is in Alpine, 5 miles on left, Alpine Village RV Park, $10. $2 to fill fresh tank. Nearest firewood for sale is in Alpine. There’s piles of freshly cut wood all over the campground but it’s green and much too wet to burn. Be aware that with Arizona’s ongoing extreme drought it’s parched land and the lake is very low. Don’t eat the fish. Catch and release. About 1/2 it’s normal
