Amazing camp ground. A couple of notes for potential campers. Right now only 2 of the 3 bathrooms are open meaning there is only one location at the south side of the campgrounds that is open and non handicap with a male restroom and and a female restroom and then there is one open at the north side that is a handicap accessible restroom. Water is from a well but it’s cold and refreshing. It’s shaded in nearly every spot so solar is hit or miss. Get a spot near the river cause there isn’t access from the inner sites to the river. The views are amazing the campgrounds are quiet. The hostess is kind helpful and there is no cellular service out there so be prepared. Amazing campground.
— STAY OUT OF CAMPSITES THAT HAVEN’T BEEN RESERVED BY YOU — Want river access? There’s always next time. Update as of June 2024: No water pump or camp host like there use to be before 2020. The sites along the river seem to be in the best shape, but there is only one usable vault toilet for about 16 campsites worth of visitors. And they’re in pretty rough shape too. BYOTP (bring your own toilet paper) 😬 Sites are currently free and first come first serve; so if river sites are occupied you might want to look elsewhere.
I hesitate to draw attention to this campground, as it was so peaceful and untouched, I would hate to see it become one of those places that is overrun by too many visitors! It’s right on a beautiful river and is full of old growth shady trees! It was clean and inviting and Amy, the Host, was delightful!
I’ve been camping since I was a kid and this place is definitely #2 to camping in Hyder, AK with all the wild grizzlies. I recommend this campground specifically over the others nearby as it is just nicer and there is currently no day fee to boot. Bagby Hot Springs is just another two miles down the road ($5 for day use of the soaking tubs at Bagby). There is so much wildlife here. It lives up to its name also! Here is a video of a kingfisher I took just this morning chasing away a flock of ducks along with what I think may be a heron. If you are a huckleberry enjoyer then this is your place! :) I also found blackberries, raspberries and thimbleberries on site as well. The Ripplebrook Camp Store is nearby if you forgot any camping essentials or if you just want a delicious cup of locally
We camped for 3 nights at site 15 in the summer season with 6 adults and a dog. The pump water is kinda gross, so pack in your own if you can, every site has a fire pit with grate and at least 1 picnic table. There are vault toilets. If you can visit during the week rather than weekend, this is a great option with decent spacing in between sites. We did have some rowdy neighbors but they quieted down by 10pm.
