Heart of Rockies Campground

Usually RV parks like this don't have very nice tent sites, so I was pleasantly surprised at these. The tent sites are along a stream in the back, nicely separated from the RV area, but still close enough to walk to the bathrooms and office. The bathrooms and showers were clean, and the owners even hosted a Labor Day BBQ and provided tons of food for the guests. Wifi worked well near the office, but didn't reach the tent sites. I would definitely stay here again next time I'm in Salida.||||It was pretty hot when I visited and I overheard some of the RV guests complaining about power going out when too many RV's use their air conditioning, so I guess that's a consideration if you have an RV. We ended up here because our plans fell apart, but they had a cancellation. It was a great surprise! The place is clean. The staff is professional and courteous. All of the other guests were very welcoming and friendly. The location is superb with clear views of the Rockies on all sides (and great sunrise / sunset photo opportunities.

We arrived in Salida on Friday night, initially thinking we'd dispersed camp. Instead, we had no problem getting two adjacent tent sites at Heart of the Rockies. I loved that their tent section is totally separated from the RV section. There are water spigots and a port-a-potty by the tent sites, and then a longer walk will take you to the legit bathroom. It was totally perfect for the price. I'll stay here again and again!

The staff was great and really helpful! One of our tent stakes split and the guy in the office offered us his tape so we wouldn't have to buy any! Great service. The views are great and there's a stream you can walk down to pretty easily from T-22 or the neighboring sites. The restrooms are clean and easy to get to, plus there's wifi! Any site that's not marked as stream side has no trees. It didn't bother us but if you come in the summer it definitely heats up quickly. The sites that are not stream side are also a little more desert like with rocky dusty dirt and ours had a fire ant hill in the middle. If you're looking for more of a shaded, groomed site then you should get a stream side site. Whichever you pick, I definitely recommend camping here!

This is a nice little campground just west of Salida and a close drive to the trailhead for hiking Mt. Shavano and Tabeguache Peak. Overall I really enjoyed this place as the staff was extremely friendly and there is an indoor rec room/laundry and bathrooms with showers. However, if you'd rather pay more you won't find this place to be as nice as a KOA campground as the facilities are quite old but are working.||||The tent campsite near the front of the property isn't the best as it's close to the road which has a lot of noise through most of the night. I'd still consider this luxury camping as any time you have access to clean water, showers, and toilets you're definitely not roughing it!
