Guernsey State Park is a wonderful small park with a view of Laramie Peak to die for and a collection of some of the best CCC Parkitecture available to the visitor or camper.||Do not miss "The Castle," a two story stone and log structure which frames the Peak through a stone archway. Read about the history of this park; it is well worth the time.||Wildflowers here can often be spectacular. One summer I saw a field on blooming primroses that turned the prairie to gold.||You are near other great sights like the Oregon Trail Ruts, Ft. Laramie, and the best steakhouse in Wyoming, the Miners' and Stockmans' Bar in Hartville. ||Take a couple of days and make this loop with your camping base in the Guernsey State Park. Lovely!
First, this is the most amazing place for sunrises and sunsets. Panoramic views everywhere. We stayed in the yurts, they are furnished with log furniture and are comfy, with great decks and views as far as the eye can see. Their location in the park is private and just a perfect setting. Can't go wrong with any of the camp sites. Except maybe the Sandy beach ones. They are mostly for RVs and boaters, no privacy here, but close to the boat dock
Guernsey State Park is a very scenic reservoir north and west of Guernsey, WY. The scenery is absolutely great and the campgrounds are well maintained. There is a great museum for history-buffs and a “castle” on the hill which offers a wonderful vantage point to view the scenic beauty of the area. One of the best State Parks I have ever been to!
We had a family get together for 6 people in one yurt and had PLENTY of room. Beautiful views with spartan amenities. It was a perfect getaway. It was not much more than camping, but we all had mattresses to sleep on in an effectively "Super strong tent". Nice to not have to bring all the tent equipment. There are pit toilets, separate mens and womens, nearby that are shared by the 4 yurts. Each yurt has a nice deck with a picnic table and separate bench, a fire ring, and one of the nicest charcoal grills I've seen at a campground. ||||The yurts are close to the "castle" and "million dollar biffy" which are CCC (WPA) construction projects from the 30s. They don't build things like THAT anymore. We did a nice easy hike along the ridge that started at the castle.
Good value for our RV trip- great level sites with a view of the lake at Sandy Beach Campground. This was after Labor Day so there were no crowds. The park is close to historic Ft. Laramie where we spent the afternoon. There was a convenient grocery store to pick up supplies for dinner and our road trip. The bridge went over the train tracks was amazing- what a structure and the long coal trains that went through reminded us of the great resources America has.
