Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center

AMAZING! The Great Sand Dunes in Colorado are absolutely breathtaking! Standing against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the scale of the dunes feels like stepping onto another planet. Hiking to the top of Star Dune was a challenge, but the panoramic views were worth every step. Sandboarding down the slopes was an incredible rush, and wading in the seasonal Medano Creek was the perfect way to cool off. It’s a surreal, majestic landscape that every nature lover needs to see at least once!

As a traveler, this place is one of the unique places in the US. Either sunset or sunrise are absolutely worth it. If I can make enough time and come early and hike all the way to the high dunes. The park is very organized, and there are plenty of parking spaces. There is water on site, if you need to. Come check it out and enjoy.

The visitor center has all the usual souvenirs and information displays, along with running water restrooms located inside the building. I found my usual magnet, ornament, and tokens inside. Behind the visitor center are a couple trails which lead to great distant views of the dunes. Bring a telephoto lens for some excellent shots at sunset without having to walk far from your car.

I always love stopping in at a visitors center. This one offers great info, a beautiful overview of the mountains and dunes, a short easy self guided path around the center and a 15 min well made movie showcasing the dunes, river, mountains and seasons of this very unusual National Park. Free parking with pass. We had no wait on our September weekday visit with plenty of parking. No reservations or timed entry required.

Nice visitor center with a great view of the dunes and an informative video of how it was created and other interesting facts. you can rent a board to slide down the dunes just before the visitor center at the oasis. “… midnight at the oasis send your camel to bed…” it’s a song - look it up 🤣
