Love this place! We stayed in site 3, which requires you to walk your stuff up a small hill. At 9400', this can be a little daunting so be careful. Site 3 is quite private and has a fantastic view. The other sites also looked really nice. You do have to get a permit through the aquatic center in Los Alamos, but it's a fairly quick process and the woman we worked was super helpful. The drive up to the campground from Los Alamos is steep is spots and windy, but not super difficult. Its paved up to Pajarito, and then dirt for a quarter mile. The dirt section is pretty rutted but our Corolla didnt have a problem, even when it rained - I probably wouldn't try it with a lower vehicle though. If you're arriving late, be careful... it seems like a lot of people use the sites in the evening without
Seemed like a nice quiet place to overnight while I waited on my campground reservations at another campground to get closer that was until a group of people showed up at 9:30 pm across the little dirt road at a group seating area to chop wood, talk loud, and I guess begin to party. Ihad been there in the parking lot for hours relaxing and chilling. I left. Unfortunately, I had already taken my sleeping medicine so it was a little tough being run off by their inconsiderate actions but I managed to find a spot in the forest near American Spring Campground. I will not be returning to Camp May unfortunately. Pretty area.
Good camping area near Pajarito ski area. Bathrooms are clean. Very nice group camp / picnic spots. Reserve your spot at Larry Walkup Aquatic Center in Los Alamos. No electricity or water available at camp sites
Call for a permit. High altitude 9000ft. Roads are unmaintained.
Camp May is great for dispersed camping but fills up quick. You can camp in the pajarito parking lot for summer mountain biking. No fires though. And don't be a jerk!
