Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs

Was surprised and appalled when I was berated by the front desk receptionist as soon as I walked into the lobby. My (almost) mother-in-law was in line to check in while me and my fiancé were looking at the merchandise and magazines in the waiting area, and the receptionist (blonde woman) angrily told everyone to be quiet because she was trying to “deal with something new”, then a few minutes later shouted across the room to ask us specifically if we were here with anyone. It was really confusing because we weren’t sure why she was first frustrated with everyone then us separately until we realized she thought me and my fiance were under 18 (we’re in our late 20s but look young). After we had to sign hot tub waivers and she realized we were adults she seemed flustered and said things like

Service was HORRIBLE! We stayed multiple days and was treated like an inconvenience the times we saw staff, which was checking in and out. The room was clean but plain. The bed was the WORST bed we have ever slept on. But the location was beautiful!! The mornings were perfect! The hot tubs were very tiny with algae in them. If you ignored the slime we got a beautiful view at sunset and a herd of deer came walking by. We would come back to Ouray but we are NOT staying here again.

We spent a week at Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs in Ouray, CO, and really enjoyed our stay. The lodge is at the end of town, making it quiet and scenic, yet still within walking distance to the ice climbing park and into town. The views are beautiful in every direction. The staff were very friendly and happy to recommend great places to eat.||Our room had a king-size bed with comfortable pillows and a small sitting area with two high-back chairs. The closet is small, so extra hangers are helpful, especially with winter or climbing gear. The room included a microwave and tall mini fridge. Although the hotel is older, the bathroom was updated and roomy with great storage. We’d stay again—next time in a larger room.

The rooms are cozy and the bed and pillows were very comfy. I paid for a wine in-room but never received it, I didn’t ask for it because I realized too late. The hot springs are great and come with good views of the nearby mountains. I appreciate the frequently updated map telling you each tub’s temperature as well as the very warm robes they let you rent for only $5 per person per stay. They never came for room service around late-morning or afternoon. I was just unlucky, but I found a dried big booger on one of my towels, but the room had extras so it wasn’t a problem. Guests really shouldn’t blow their noses on hotel towels and definitely shouldn’t expect a local hotel to have industry-level cleaning.

We loved our stay at Box Canyon for a long weekend getaway! The Hot Springs were just outside our room for easy and frequent access. The peaks were still slightly snow covered and the views were phenomenal. I wish the hot springs were open/accessible 24/7 but I guess I understand why they are only open for certain hours. The room was clean and spacious and they gave us plenty of towels for shower and hot spring use. I recommend bringing your own robe, tho I'm sure the ones they offer (for a fee) are nice.
