Second year in a row our party of 40+ has had to go home sick. We assumed it was something we ate last year, but way too coincidental for this to happen 2 years in a row. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea - severe enough for our pregnant one to require IV fluids to recover. Our stay was in July. (3 months ago) I have contacted John with concerns about the cleanliness of the lodge in hopes there would be interventions. His only response was that he had not had any other complaints and all had left 5 star reviews. I can see from the reviews this is not true. We have also contacted the State Department of Health. The property is infested with mice. Mouse droppings clearly visible in all but one room. (I do have photos) Linens are old and torn. Yard is overgrown with thistles and weeds - w

Our family has stayed at the Black Hills Hideaway Lodge for at least 10 years, and it WAS a beautiful facility with a great outside area to gather. The last several years, however, we have noticed the cleanliness and general upkeep and attention to detail have gone dramatically downhill, getting successively worse as the years have passed. We have had three occasions in which our reservations were either cancelled or double booked, forcing us to make alternate last-minute arrangements for our family reunions. Every room had remnants of mice feces, the counters and floors were not cleaned, and the bedding was haphazard at best. When we stayed at the lodge in 2024, at least half of our party ended up getting violently ill, which we erroneously assumed was due to a bug being passed around.

This place and John both deserve a 10 star review. The whole group had an absolute blast there. Big enough for a shared bachelor and bachelorette party. Super cozy and comfy, inside the national forest, and lots of nearby lakes and activities. We will be back for sure!

Great space for several couples. Plenty of bathrooms. Kitchen has two dishwashers and plenty of plates and silverware. The road to the cabin is sand and gravel so be prepared if you’re on a motorcycle. AC unit is only available in the living area but we purchased box fans to put in windows at night. Two game rooms and two living room spaces. We would definitely recommend to anyone. Thanks for having us!
