Was nice to get pretty good Mexican Tacos ~ especially since my dinner partner is Mexican! Our only fault on the food was that the Taco shells were cold, would have upped them to 5 star had the shells just been heated. I'm sure we'll go back. Dining 'out', we did expect to have a server come to our table to take our order, not be told to come up to the bar to place our order. The same when the check was ready ~ not expecting, nor wanting, to have to go up to the bartender to find the check. My dinner date, a True "Gentleman" noted his disdain with that. When out "for dinner" ~ It is not Just fir the Food! The Service is a Huge part of a dining out experience.
Really special place. But don’t be too spooked by the entrance. First impressions outside you’ll find an almost abandoned/destitute building. Follow the bat signs and you’ll be rewarded with an outdoor patio and contemporary American pub. Locals and transplants all under the same roof. Live music and events are common. You can tell this is a community space just as much as a “dive” bar. A refreshing look at the “new” Stamford—inclusive and welcoming!
This is a quirky and interesting hotel. The owners are definitely security minded-front door is kept locked, access door to each floor of rooms is locked, and of course each individual room is locked. Lots of antiques and old paintings. The dining room had many tables set, ready for patrons, but curiously no dining service is offered. Looks like they wanted to preserve the prosperous look and feel of a period some 75 years ago. Overall it was an interesting stay and price was reasonable. If AC or modern accommodations are important to you, best look elsewhere.
One of the other reviewers here called place a bit quirky, that it is. And eclectic blend of old and new, run by a family with Irish ancestry. The room they gave me was rather large, two queen beds, a living room area and a rather large bathroom. A nice place to stay overnight after working nearby, restful, and yes, I would return there. There is no elevator, so luggage is transported up a stairway. Ok if you work or are visiting nearby. It could use an upgrade, but it's an enjoyable place to rest and recharge before traveling.
The Belvedere - though it may have been--in 1967, in the throes of renovations, upgrades, etc.--HARDLY offers hospitality, ambiance and that “welcome home again” friendship and camaraderie of a by gone era. In 2012, the website is quite misleading--starting with the fact that there is NO restaurant--it was closed years ago due to lack of customers. I can completely understand that there are no customers because the Innkeepers are rude and hostile! When I called to make the reservation, I was asked why we were coming to Stamford and when I mentioned that we will be visiting our boys at a nearby camp, as soon as the woman realized it was a Jewish camp, her attitude and tone completely changed. Nevertheless, when we arrived and entered the lobby (a "balmy" 86 degrees, as suggested on my
