Zion Hotel Dome

The Dome is the only thing left, now as a historical landmark, from a hotel that was in the Holy City of Zion, Illinois. At the time of the demolition, the structure was one of the largest, if not the largest wooden hotel structure remaining in the country. Zion is home to several historic homes also referred to as "Painted Ladies" . The city founders original home with rare furnishings is open to the public Including rare books and Lace panel examples, due to the historic Lace factory near the lake front.

I think it’s great that Zion continues to maintain this piece of Zion history. It used to sit atop a hotel back when the city was first founded. It was called the Elijah Hospice. Unfortunately, it burned down in the 70s but they were able to save this part of it. Also, visit the Shiloh House down the street!

It's all that is left of what was once a beautiful wooden structure, a monument to the past. Fortunately Zion Historical Society in the nearby Dowie House has photos of the old structure from before it was torn down.

Every time we rolled thru Zion looking for digs(drag races) with the Zion boys (late 60's) like Shorty Mc... , hopefully still a legend with his red 55 chev; anyhow the Zion Hotel always struck me as a big matchbox waiting to go off , and that I would see it when it did.
