Tunnel Drive Trail Head

This easy out and back walk/hike consists of 3 hand blasted tunnels using nearby inmate labour. It beautifully hugs the Arkansas River and the tunnel rocks beautiful and incredibly old. As you walk through the tunnels, notice the strips of pink and white granite this is 1.7-billion yr old rock apparently. Amazing!

It was a simple walk, very beautiful view of mountains and river, the tunnels are within the first 3/4 of the mile of the hike, there are 2 simple log bridges after that and a very scenic hike. Definitely recommend if you have the time to stop and enjoy it. There are benches along the hike to stop and enjoy the views.

Absolutely beautiful hike. You have to hike about 300 yards on a paved trail that is a little steep, but once you're past that it's all level. 2 miles in to a turn around spot or continue on a more advanced trail. We saw a small herd of big horn sheep at the turn around. Amazing views of the Arkansas River.

Absolutely worth it! Great views and loved the tunnels. There is a steep hill at the very start of the trail and then it is fairly easy. There is a bathroom by the parking area if needed. Nice hike!

Wheelchair Accessibility: The Tunnel Drive Trailhead has an accessible single-user vault toilet, and van accessible parking; however, van drivers must back into the space to utilize the access aisle. The first couple of hundred yards of the trail is paved with a steep 14% to 16% slope, then the next couple of hundred yards is a mixture of loose and hard-packed crusher fines before it levels out just before the first tunnel. While the paved section is nearly twice as steep as an ADA ramp (8%), it's possible with power wheelchairs. Unfortunately, I got nearly got stuck in my power wheelchair on the steep section with loose crusher fines. After a couple of moments of panic, with no traction and spinning wheels, I was able to self-recover, and back out of rut. Therefore, at this time I can not
