Hotel Engelhard

I stayed two nights in the charming, throwback to the 50s - 70s hotel. The owner was extremely personable and offered assistance, if needed, several times. ||It was very quaint, as advertised. If you arrive looking for disappointment, you will probably find it. However, this lodge has many hidden gems and if you open your eyes, you will find them. ||It was clean, cozy and enjoyable. More of a B&B style than a Hi*^^. ||I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and I love being able to use a local business vs. a chain, whenever possible.||Drake and Hank are the most hospitable of owners and will ensure you enjoy your stay. And….it’s just a hop, skip and a few bridges from Nagshead.

Great spot, clean and comfortable rooms. My home away from home. Feels like you are in your own house and a great spot to kick back and relax. The other guest are from all over the country and folks look after one another here. Going to Hyde County? This is your spot.

The place is old and dated, but for the most part, clean and comfortable. The staff is nice and responsive. The pizza was good and affordable. My sister and mom had no cell reception, but the hotel has reliable wifi. I would definitely stay there again. I can tell the owner is working to improve the place.

I'm hesitant to review this hotel because it is in the process of being sold and will soon be under new management. Ursula and Captain Bob are retiring. That's a shame. They are dedicated to making their guests comfortable and knowledgeable about the area. ||||The restaurant is rarely open now but Ursula doesn't mind occasionally sharing her meals with the hotel guests. The rooms are Spartan bare yet exceptionally clean. I mean really clean including the top bed spread. I nestled my nose down into Clorox clean pillowcases and immersed my body into the new Memory Foam queen bed. No curtains or drapes on the windows but the venetian blinds helped a little to keep the sun out. They too didn't escape the fine cleaning. We had three rooms here for one night. One room was perfectly fine, two rooms were "tired" in terms of appearance, but the sheets and pillowcase were fresh and clean. The arrangement of the furnishings in my room, the handicap accessible room (not sure why we were assigned this room), did not make sense. The refrigerator was placed adjacent to the dresser such that you could not open the dresser drawers more than 6 inches, and the clothes rack (available in lieu of a closet) was above the refrigerator so that anything longer than a tee shirt would rest on top of the microwave that was atop the refrigerator. The handicap room had two beds, a double and a single, and a shower stool was available behind the bathroom door. The handicap bathroom was large and clean with a tub/shower combo
