Hampton Inn Detroit/Southgate

My husband and I booked Hampton Southgate a few months ago for our stay. We booked for 2/6/2026-2/8/2026. This was our first overnight trip away from our 9.5 month old. We booked because we wanted to relax in the hot tub, go swimming, enjoy the breakfast and remind ourselves of eachother before being parents and on the go all the time. The staff (Sam) was very pleasant at checkin. That was about where the pleasantries stopped. The hotel was being remodeled. We were notified upon check in. We got a newly rennovated room. We figured it would be great. A new room! We got to our room. There were paint chips all over the floor, the bathroom counter was grimey. There was a set of door hinges on the bathroom counter. Stayed here for one night, I arrived around 7pm and waited 10 minutes for an agent. Sam at the front desk was great. Room was perfect, super clean and slept very well. I was happy to hear breakfast (included) opens at 6am, which was great for me since I had to wake up early for class. The lady that works the breakfast is very kind and attentive. I like the food options: waffles, muffins, eggs with cheese, bagels, sausages, potatoes, juices, and coffee.

Man, we always dig a Hampton. On this occasion, we were driving a friend to the Detroit airport for an early flight, so we all had a nice meal at Leonardo's and spent the night close by. The dude at the desk went out of his way to put our rooms next to each other. We would have been fine, but he insisted. Our room was a king suite - ooh la la! Kind of a strange layout. The bed was sideways with our feet facing the window. And the space between the bed and the window was taken up by a couch, which I think was a pull-out. No side table or coffee table for the sofa. There was a round table instead of a desk. And a pretty nice upholstered office chair. None of these things matched in looks or in function. In all my years of travel, i will always maintain that a hotel can be built on good ground, with good amenities and the softest mattresses that money can buy, and still be nothing of use to any traveler without the people who keep it running. Ive essentially lived at this hotel for 2 disjointed months of my life for business purposes, and in all that time ive seen employees who really take their job seriously. The morning receptionist is a delightful presence, the woman who prepares the breakfast, Adrian, is always hard at work at something when im having breakfast, and the housekeeping staff do a glorious job of preparing the rooms to the same expectation every single time. These people deserve the world for the comfort they provide. Hampton would cease to be Hampton without its people.
