Derrick Knob Shelter

This shelter is typical of what we have seen on the Appalachian Trail in the Smokies. Stone structure with built in fireplace. Double decker sleeping arrangements. The ridge runners placed a tarp on this one that did help during the freeze. There is a prep area in front and on the side. There is a water source down the side trail and it was working well while we were there. There are bear cables here.

Upsides: 1) Located on a flat patch of land. 2) Freshwater spring just 50 meters from the shelter. 3) Well covered and protected from wind, rain, snow 4) Arrangements for bear proofing available. 5) Grill and Campfire structure available. 6) You'll have a sound sleep after a long hike. 7) Ranger available to assist you. Downsides: 1) Surrounded by trees, so you can't have a panaromic view of the area below you.

This spot feels up quickly due to its distance from the previous. Water source is 30 behind shelter down a steep embankment. Lots of room for tents.

No problems. Clean shelter. Water was low as we went closer to winter. Just ask around first to see if the water supply here is good.
