Cherry Ridge Cabins

It’s been a while since I last stayed here, but I was looking up the address to show a friend, and it surprised me that I hadn’t left a review. I cannot say enough good things about this place and the experiences I’ve had here! The owners were always very friendly to me, professional, informative and helpful. The cabins are rustic but clean, and the grounds are like a wonderland in the mountains, with wildlife, hiking trails, and all the accommodations to make a solo camp adventure as fun as it could possibly be. They left wood and an axe under an enclosure, and there were several fire pits and a cooking pavilion, so I was able to make s’mores, burgers, bacon & eggs and hot dogs over the fire in any form of weather. Be VERY VERY careful with this place. I am a researcher whose lived everywhere from rustic tents to yurts to nice cabins over the past decades. I found the accommodations to be perfectly fair -- a bit rustic, as some have suggested, but otherwise fine... WITH THAT SAID, the owners (Mike, in particular) were very rude and, on multiple occasions, came to the cabin POUNDING on the door and shouted at us... Once at 9pm when we were all asleep and in pajamas -- 'but why', you might ask? Because he hadn't received payment yet -- we work for a research institute and Mike 100% understood that the funds occasionally took a few days to transfer). I see another person (Mr. Billings) wrote a very positive review of Cherry ridge, below -- his experience appears to be the exception, rather than the rule

So I do not normally read, judge by or write reviews...but in this case I have to!!! On my way to the cabins (traveling with another couple who does read reviews) we did read all of the reviews and were a little nervous...but decided to not judge until we experienced the cabins ourselves. So I want to say, to those of you that had posted the negative reviews...you are clearly NOT outdoor adventure people or clearly ARE nose in the air city people!!! These cabins were rustic, maybe a little outdated (your renting a cabin in the woods folks, not a condo in Manhattan) they were not smelly or dirty, they smelled like rustic cabins in the woods, and mind you have been around for over 30 years! I came for a get-away on my own and decided to stay more days than expected. I liked the cabin I was in and the privacy. The owner did come around and blew up at me once for something I did wrong, but once I showed him some respect he was okay. I only gave 3 stars for the almost daily visits, you don't see most owners for your whole stay. Also the tenant in one of the cabins was using a power saw all day on Sunday. Go to see the pretty setting and (most days) quiet. Just show respect to the owner and you should get along fine.

This place was my home away from home while working in State College for a week. I stayed for 8 days and I can honestly say I loved it there! Mr. and Mrs. Matis were so kind to me and even offered up a larger cabin for me to stay in after the first night! The first cabin I stayed in was Cabin number 3 and it was so cute! Everything was laid out so nicely and it felt so cozy! The second cabin I stayed in was Cabin number 5, it had a few extra things that cabin number 3 didn't have ( like 2 extra beds, a bigger kitchen, a TV and a slightly larger bathroom). Number 5 was just as cozy as number 3 but made cooking a little easier for me! It also had a seat in the shower which was great for me after a 12 hour shift!
