Customer Reviews
My wife and I have been there twice. Campground area is great, just alongside Cache Creek. We haven't seen anybody else there and the reason is the acces. If you have a 4X4 in good condition vehicle, go for it. No winter traveling because road is rugged and climbing up and down the mountains is the norm. You'll have an eagle view of the mountains so scenery is astonishing.
Remote location and 4 wheel or all wheel drive is required for climbing back up out of canyon. Approach is long narrow and dusty in Summer and visitors either seek solitude or seek a remote camp to be rowdy. Pit toilet is rarely serviced and be prepared to haul out more than you bring in as a community service.
17 Aug 24. The road! Unbelievably bad. It is nearly unpassable. Light dirt bike you can make it. Big bike. Only if you’re a very good rider. ATV (4-wheeler) probably. Side by side. Sketchy. Truck very very doubtful. The road is not maintained. Campground is not maintained. Such a beautiful area. Update. Tried to get to Buck Island on 16 AUG 25. The road from Morgan Valley Rd and Hiway 16 were absolutely washed out and in worse repair since the last time I was there. It was also deer season and the hunters with high powered rifles were abundant. It was so hot and dust. The roads were nearly impassable. It was so much effort just getting into the turn off for Buck Island that we didn’t even try. It was a disappointing day. Had camping gear to stay the night. Left the area with cuts and brui
Need 4x4 truck with spare long dirt drive. Lots of wild life ! Spotted a marten ! ! No water service bring h20
A lot of cars used to get lost trying to cut across to hwy16 from lower lake or Berryessa. I saw an old guy in a 2008 Ford focus get back up that hill from buck island. So, no, you don't need 4×4, but you better know how to drive. There is cell service at the top of the hill, but good luck being rescued by anyone but EMS. You may either find buck island jam packed with people firing machine guns, or you may spend two weeks there without seeing a soul. Don't go out there on 4th of July weekend. Its pretty intense. About a hundred people with trucks guns and BBQ.
