They've finally gotten this place cleaned up, a couple years ago this campground was a mess but now it's being taken care of! Most of the sites have galvanized pipe corrals for four horses, while a few still have the older wooden post corrals, but still descent shape. All sites are now reservation only, so that's been helping reduce the homeless campers, but there are still a few non-horse campers rolling through in the evening and taking up sites and leaving early in morning to avoid paying. Bathrooms are cleaned daily now, there's two muck pits, one at each end and for a small campground that's plenty and they're easily accessible. The trails have all recently been marked with colored tape, which is nice, but the main trail to the beach is marked well and you can ride for miles up an
Beautiful horse campground. We were here for a layover but we will return. Nice pipe corrals, drinking water but no water to fill up your tanks per signage. There is a manure pile, quite far from the camp spots. Unfortunately non-equestrians are allowed to take up equestrian spots. Easy access to the beach with beautiful trails to explore. Spots are not easy and technical to get into, but if you know how to backup your rig, you'll be fine.
This is a great area to camp with horses. Quiet, not busy with vehicles driving through. Water was easily accessed, but we could not hook our hoses up to water. Had to carry the buckets with water back to the horse stalls. Not too hard, but when you have at least 6 horses and each get two buckets ... It becomes a workout... The camp areas were large, sand filled. We had 3 camp sites, 2 of the sites had wood corrals, each had 2 stalls, and 1 camp site had metal corrals with 4 stalls. Wild Mare Horse Camp was substantially better than the last one we camped at.
Beautiful campground. It is very quiet and peaceful. There's a wonderful breeze coming off of the ocean that keeps everything nice and cool even in the summer.
Wild Mare Horse is not a good horse camp. Yes, there is pens for horses but Sites 3, 7 & 8 have railroad quality gravel in the pens, not 3/4 minus gravel, but large sharp pointed rocks. It is also allows non horse people in travel trailers and tents to camp there. Which is the majority of the people camping there. I don't blame them, there is other no place for them to camp. The other two campgrounds are full of ATV's that you hear all the time at Wild Mare Horse Camp. Then there is the mosquitoes! By mid July the mosquitoes are numerous but OFF very generously applied to horse and person works very well. There is no camphost and very occasionally a park person will stop by long enough to throw some toilet paper into the restrooms. I did like the riding there but I won't be goi
