Wagon Wheel Campground

This is an abandoned campground. A previous reviewer said some buildings were open, but the ones we checked were all locked. There are zero facilities here so be prepared to boondock. The vibe reminded me of Chernobyl. It feels like everyone packed up for the night sometime 15 years ago and forgot to come back. We stayed for two days and were 1 of 3 campers here. The area is so large we couldn't see the other two from our campsite.

This is one heck of a place! If you like to be alone, this place is perfect for you! This was once part of Bonny Lake State Park that closed in 2011. The state still owns it and it's free to camp here just don't expect much facilities as they are no longer maintained. It's fascinating seeing such a large facility skowly being overtaken by nature. Most sites are totally usable and can fit large trailers or even motorhomes. Place is extremely quiet and you feel totally disconnected from the world, which I love. Please respect this place and don't vandalize or make a mess. Cleanup after yourself so others can enjoy such a unique and rare place.

Abandoned state park... great for boondocking though.
