Thunder Rock Campground

BEWARE: BEARS! Bears were not aggressive, but you can tell they are comfortable in the area. Make sure you put your trash in the cans before leaving or going to sleep. Campground has great spots. Several have shade for almost all of the day. The river is close by and lots of sites have access, but beware it’s a fast running river. The bathrooms are fine. 2 on the end were just outhouse style. Not sure about the one up by the entrance. I did NOT see any water, but I may be wrong. Sites were level and had enough room for 1 large tent. There is a max of 5ppl per site, so that was fine. Fire pits have a grill on them. I think it’s called “Thunder Rock” because of the constant road noise day and night. Probably not a problem for a camper, but no hookups. Overall, this is a good place to camp, especially if you are into rafting or kayaking, as most people staying there were. The showers were acceptable for a campground, but I did see cockroaches coming out at night, which was unpleasant. There were no designated spots to wash dishes, but drinking water was available. One of the two camping areas was flooded during heavy rain, and some of the campsites were very close to each other, which made privacy an issue. Cell service was extremely limited. I had one bar on Verizon but could not make phone calls and struggled to load weather updates. AT&T had no service at all.

Probably the best little campground in the area. Some of these reviews are not accurate and one with a bunch of pictures is not even of thunder rock. I've been camping here for well over 30 years. I've had rowdy nights I've had Very quite nights. And everything in between. They usually do have a host. Which is nice, because it generally keeps the rangers out and off your back. In fact the only bad times I've had have been at other campgrounds in the area and from the rangers wanting inspect and hassle peaceful adults....🤯 But not here. Usually clean and stocked for the most part. But you always need to be prepared for the unexpected... You are camping BTW.

We had a interesting action packed week. Yes there is truck noise, but the beauty while awake surpasses the noise at night. We arrived a day or so before Zeta. Host Rob updated us on the river and at one point he thought we all should make a run for high ground, but the river lowered almost as fast as it rose. Bathroom in the front is flushing with hot showers. Kept clean. We will be back,(but not with an impending hurricane😜)

I'm torn on review for this place simply because I love this little piece of heaven. It's beauty and serenity instill opportunity for finding peace, while the perfectly situated waterways, watering holes and hiking trails provide ample chance to escape into the wilderness. The unfortunate part of camping here tends to be the local population which comes out to host obnoxiously loud and trashy parties until the wee early hours. Blasting loud music which they only increase the volume on when asked to turn it down, firing off fireworks and explosives throughout the night, and general disregard for neighboring campers are all just parts of fun of staying here over the weekend--probably the towns' most revenue-generating time.
