The Hostel California

We had such an amazing experience staying here while we were in Bishop. From the moment we arrived, Kyle made us feel completely at home. He’s an incredibly gracious host. He was welcoming, laid-back, and genuinely invested in making sure everyone had a great time. He had all the info on the best bouldering in the area which was super helpful. We can’t forget Sophie! She is the sweetest, most gentle pup. If you’re staying in Bishop, this is the spot. Great vibes, great people, and fantastic local insight. We’ll absolutely be back.

I’ve stayed here three times in the past couple of years. It’s a quirky spot with lots of space. There’s so many seating areas, both inside and out. You’ll always have a place to sit. They provide a towel and inside the shower there is a mixture of bronner’s and water, so bring any other toiletries you may need. I’ve stayed in the private rooms and the dorms and enjoyed my stay every time. It’s a very chill place. Thanks Matt :)

A fantastic, friendly hostel in Bishop. The staff are super friendly and the owner's dog Sophie is a bonus! The hostel is located in a beautiful old house, just off the main street of Bishop. It has plenty of parking, a superbly stocked kitchen, dining room, patio and living area. The bedrooms are super clean, spacious and really comfy. The WiFi is really fast and there's plenty of hot water. There are free coffee and tea making facilities and past guests left plenty of free food and spices if you run out of something. We only stayed for one night but honestly could have stayed longer. Would really recommend for anyone passing through this area!

I stayed one night here just before heading into a multi-day backpack. On the positive side, the low price for a bed in a bunk room was jaw dropping. Not much more than the cost of a site at a National Forest campground. For that price, you get a bed, a roof, a kitchen, a shower, wifi, and several other amenities. Price wasn’t the sole determining factor for me but it certainly may be for many. I was also attracted to a funky, outdoors oriented vibe I expected. Indeed, I enjoyed a great conversation with a PCT hiker that evening. That said, I don’t believe I’d stay there again. The vibe was overshadowed by lack of upkeep and need for some deep attention and care for the facility. Examples: while my bed was otherwise clean and comfortable, the broken slat made for dip in middle of bed. The

Upon arrival we were warmly greeted, and introduced to the place and facilities. I know it's a hostel but who ever owns this place should pay attention to cleanliness. Perhaps they should named refrigerator shelves by the room, so everyone would have the same chance to storage their foods and drinks, or put small refrigerator in the room. I got an impression that common areas are not to clean. Wouldn't want to prepare my food there. If you're passing this town it's still ok for one night.
