The Historic Glen Ferris Inn

What should have been a great experience, turned out to be something else. The ambiance was just okay with an open format in the restaurant. I did not stay, just stopped over on an important anniversary for dinner. I've been driving by this place wanting to come in and finally stopped. They had a nice menu with a variety of options for all types of dietary needs and wants. The pricing, with exception of the steaks, seemed reasonable. I ordered the chop steak (sides were extra, per selection) with mashed potatoes & gravy and vegetables. The chopped steak itself was very good, but the gravy had absolutely no flavor, the mushrooms we're out of a can and the vegetables came out of a bag from the back of the freezer. Attempted to stop here and eat after a day in NRG National park after hearing good things and our experience was horrible with little to note. Met at the door by what I assume is the manager and he tells us to “sit anywhere but some may not be clean because we are busy”. We pick our table and are then passed over by multiple servers as they serve pre existing tables and greet and seat a few new tables. We sat for around 10 minutes and after the waitress continued to avoid eye contact we decided to head out as it seemed our business wasn’t wanted. I’d like to note that if your establishment can’t handle 5 small tables on a Saturday at 3pm you may want to consider hiring more people. This was extremely disappointing as this was a “test run” to see if we may eventually stay here at the hotel.

Our room was welcoming after a day of travel, quiet colors, nice furnishings. The bathroom was sparkling clean. Comfortable beds. There was not a coffee maker, which we missed. All personnel that we encountered were friendly and accommodating. ||||Service in the attached restaurant was a bit slow but the food was good. The windows overlook the river, which was like a mirrow that evening, reflecting the wooded hills. ||||We will certainly stay there again when we are traveling through the area.

Firstly, the fact this historic inn is open to the public rates 5 stars in my estimation. Beautiful picturesque setting with a waterfall spanning 500 feet or so across the Kanawha river. Unfortunately the guest rooms have a musty smell & are remodeled with carpet which exacerbates the problem. Amazingly the interior of the inn is fairly well preserved. At the front desk you can see each room key on a wooden shelf much as it probably was when stage coaches/Andrew Jackson and a few other presidents patronized the inn. The ambiance of the "new addition" dining area is unparalleled with a view of the river and falls. The food is pretty good. I really want to start this off by saying that the young woman at the desk and the young man working the restaurant when we arrived were so nice, helpful and just wonderful. The food was alright too. But, that's where the good times ended, friends. We finished eating, then went up to our rooms to find not the ghosts we had hoped to discover, but mold, someone's fake eyelashes, some what may be blood and some very evident of what made them white stains on the furniture. In the time it took us to rush book a different place to stay, our throats felt tight and we itched all over. I will say the young woman at the desk was great and got us a refund as soon as we brought it to her attention, but there's an evident lack on the maintenance and cleaning side of the hotel.
