Steer Creek Campground

Simple campground with two vault bathrooms. With the exception of a few passing cars along the paved road beside the campground, it is very quiet and peaceful. Balanced shade and sunlight with the tall pine trees. The camping spots are in relatively good shape with picnic tables that were good, but not great.

Went end of May early June so it was just us and one other camp. The weather was a plus it wasn't hot in the day time and in the evening/night the air was crisp. Bird songs all around, heard coyotes at night 😱 and cows but they were far away. Someone had horses out there and they were nice to look at. The cati pics were filtered so you can see them better. Don't be bare foot here

This is a quiet, no frills campground. There is a hand water pump in the middle of the campground, but otherwise no amenities. No electricity, no dump station. As other reviews have said, there are bugs, but we didn't find them particularly oppressive compared to other areas of the country. Many people tent camp here, but it will accommodate RVs of up to 40 feet in length depending on which campsite you use. The grounds are not well attended. There is long grass, and tree limbs are not trimmed well along the road (so you will potentially scratch your vehicle). Remote. Quiet. Mostly vacant. They had been taking out a lot of old dead pines before we got there, so they had a big debris pile to deal with and some cleanup, but it's nice to see they're doing needed maintenance. We had a stormy but good nights sleep here during a bikepacking trip in western Nebraska. The pit toilets were pretty clean and didn't stink, and the water from the hand pump tasted clean and was easy to pump up. If you want amenities, this isn't it. If you want a peaceful place to camp in the Sandhills that isn't crowded, this just might be the ticket.

If alone and quiet are your goal while camping in a public campground, this is your place. It seems to be off the beaten path. The hand pump well works perfectly and the vault toilet is newer and in very good condition. There is also ample off trial hiking and wildlife viewing available. However, mountain biking is challenging in the loose sand that exists throughout the region. Really, for $5 per night, it is a great place to stay for a few days.
