South Lake Desor Campground

So we camped here exactly a week after the two deaths occurred. The outhouse was nasty and the door kicked in. There was still sheriff tape that was strewn around the entrance trail to the campsite, but it was open to use. We had to share the campsite with a nice Frenchman, because it was a literal traffic jam with a scad of campers all arriving simultaneously. Not the nicest place on this island, but not as bad as east chicken bone.

I have heard campers complain that it is a pain to walk the 150 feet downhill to the lakeshore to get water, and that is a legitimate complaint, but the lake is stunning, the campground we had (#2) was excellent, it was quiet, the loons were howling all night long, the water was placid, and the sunset was one of the best I had ever seen. It is a great campsite. We got there early to ensure we got a campsite, but it never really got very crowded. I thought it was great. The water had a little bit of algae, but after filtering, the water tasted pretty good and was fairly cold.

Camping during August was busy so we took an interior site which was very private. Beach area was social with a great sunset! Thimbleberries were a nice addition for breakfast.

This was my second-to-last stop on my hike across the island from Rock Harbor to Windigo in September 2016. It is a nice campground and I found a good site for my tent. There are no shelters, so plan on bringing your tent. Slept fairly well, and view of the lake through the trees is pretty cool also.

Nice campground, however be warned that entry into this campground from the south and west part of the island can be interesting. Large elevation change down heading into the area which means for a tougher hike going out. Overall campground was nicely kept up and had less issues than say Feldtmann lake which rangers referred to as the jungle when we were on the island.
