Quaking Aspen Campground

Beautiful area! This is a super clean, well maintained (lightly used?) campground in some beautiful high elevation wilderness. Super easy access and friendly park rangers :) Please clean up your messes and don’t vandalize anything. :)

Great place to dry camp. We camped in 32 foot 5th wheel, we would fit in many sites. We were in #3. We picked that for solar and starlink. There was some road noise due to gravel trucks and a cattle guard.

Beautiful site & with Access Pass, camping was only $2.50 a night! "Quaking Aspen campground offers a respite from the heat in a setting of aspen and mature ponderosa pine trees. Approximately 6 miles south of Fort Wingate, this is the most recently renovated campground on the Mt. Taylor Ranger District. The area has a rich history of railroad logging and the original town of McGaffey was built in the vicinity of McGaffey Lake a few miles down the road." We visited McGaffey Lake but it was dried up & not much of a lake anymore.

Nice clean campground right off of the road. At 7,600 feet all sites are FCFS, no reservations. The cost is $5 per site per day use or overnight before applying an interagency pass discount. They have posted an increase request to $10 per site and with the great condition it’s in, they will likely get it. Even without the water. There are 20 sites including one site for a group. It looks like they have recently updated this campground with concrete molded picnic tables, updated fire rings, grill and tent pads all in new raised level and pea gravel areas. With the kind of investment made, the only thing missing are the bear boxes... and the water. The Ranger advised the update was over 12 years ago and it is still in great shape. This is a hidden gem for mountain biking enthusiasts. Miles of fun, easy (blue) trails. The campsite is super clean and well maintained. There usually are very few other campers, so it's usually quiet. There's no running water, so be adequately prepared. The pit toilets are clean. The self-pay fee is very low; $10 (as of this review). We've been stopping here for many years. Beautiful area, but if you're not a trail rider or hiker, you might be bored. Verizon service is spotty, at best.
