Penitente Canyon Campground

I spent 2 nights here and had a great time. It's a nice quiet place to hang out with friends and when I went (September) it was very comfortable weather. The campsites are large, all have a nice concrete bench, and most are spaced out very well. The bathrooms are plenty and clean as well. There are plenty of trails for hiking or biking, and the scenery looks beautiful. It's also easy for most any car to get to any campsite, it's a very well kept road. My only issue was the camp host, they had loud, barking dogs at the entrance of the campgrounds.

Took 2 families to camp and had a great time over a holiday weekend. Campsites are spread out. Really enjoyed hiking nearby.

This is the coolest place in colorado! It’s beautiful! My favorite place to visit while in south fork!!! The Indians thrived in this ancient volcanic eruption.

Stayed here on the GDMBR and it was great! Definitely fill up water on the way in because there wasn’t any near our site. Well-marked water spout near the entrance, and flowing well as of Sep 2025.

An absolute gem. Spaces 1 thru 4 are very roomy and far enough apart that you feel like you're alone in the wild. Not sure if water is actually available so come prepared.
