I had the experience of life time here. I got lucky securing a camping spot here last minute during the busy season. After a bumpy drive on gravel, I got there, completely alone, surrounded by silence. I couldn’t hear or see another soul for miles. Most people were camped at Chisos Basin, about 10 miles away. organized my gear, cooked dinner, and took a walk into the open wilderness; no trails, just space. By the time I returned, it was too late to set up my tent. So, I slept in the car. There are signs warning of mountain lions and javelinas. But they big boxes that you can store you good in it. My sleeping setup in the Corolla Cross was very comfortable (Not the first time). That night, I got exactly what I needed: total silence and peace. Next day was my last morning in the mountains af

I actually stayed at Paint Gap 2, but passed site no. 1 on the way in. Paint Gap 1 is accessible by any vehicle. For Paint Gap 2 it depends. The day before I arrived there was considerable rain in the park. To get to Paint Gap 2 and beyond you had to drive through a few flooded low spots on the road. On the day I was there you could not make it through in a car or low clearance vehicle. Really enjoyed my night including when another storm came through in the night. Just wish I could have seen the stars, but there was cloud cover. I’ll be back. The solitude is worth it.

A primitive roadside backcountry campsite in Big Bend National Park. This one is by itself unlike others that are paired together. Great site. Lots of room. Wide open with good views all around. Good central location for getting out and exploring the park. I spent 4 nights in a row here in 2014. Note: you need to check in with the rangers at Panther Junction Visitor Center and get a permit to camp here and any of the other backcountry campsites.
