Organized Group Tent Camping at Hickory Run State Park

Out of state group, we reserved campsite J for a family/troop campout. We had kids ages 1-11. We will not be returning to this location. The park is lovely and there are lots of things to do, but would suggest staying elsewhere. (Always depends on what kind of stay you want) Group site J is large and shaded, but what the photos dont show are that its just roots, lots and lots of roots. We were closest to the portable toilets and that was a horrible experience. I understand the need for self closing doors with animals, but the constant slamming through the night was jolting, especially if a rowdy group of teens comes together. We were there Fri-Sun and they were never cleaned. Maybe put one at each site so they are used by your own group and kept clean to your standards? Quiet hours were no

Had a great time there, perfect size for our group. The only downside was the bathroom. I wish they had the new constructed bathrooms open, hopefully next year!

For large group primitive camping, this is a great spot. If you are looking for showers and other amenities, this isn’t the spot. That’s the family camp ground. If you want a spot to bring a bunch of families or friends or a church group (why we came), it’s great. The spot is away from the road, so the kids can play in relative safety without you worrying about them being hit by a stray idiot. There are plenty of spots to set up for making food, hanging out around a huge fire ring, and setting up tents and EZups.

Plenty of space for our very large group (reserved 5 group sites) for both tents, kitchen and parking. Only wish they'd finally finish the bathrooms we've been watching them work on for years.

Great little place for some weekend camping. The organized group site DOES NOT have facilities or showers (just porta potties) HOWEVER there are comfortable showers and proper bathrooms around the visitors center just about a half hour away. Bring bottled water, no water spigot at organized camp sites (water available at visitor center if you bring water containers) Bring your own fire wood as well; although there is a camp store, again near the visitor center about a half mile up the road. There's a dollar general and a small grocery store about 10 minute drive away, if you forgot something and need to pick it up. Beautiful little place, with a lot of natural sight seeing near by, decent signage to help you get around. There are hiking trails, fishing, waterfalls near enough by car.
