We love Olive Lake and the history of the area! There are about 25 or so campsites, with half of them reservable online and the other half first come first served. Sites fill up fast and can be crowded on a summer weekend. There was no host when we were there and the campground was full. There is a lower campground that is closest to the docks but the sites are very close together, and an upper section that is a little more spread out. Some sites are closer to the water than others. There was a lot of noise and rowdiness in the lower campsites so we were happy to be away from that. There is no water or garbage and a few clean pit toilets throughout. The lake is very clean and relatively warm and is mostly for paddle boarding, canoeing, and fishing. There is no waterskiing (no wake) and no
A nice long drive down a dirt road, then the trees open up to a beautiful lake. Very clean pit toilets but in the 4 days we were there they never stocked the toilet paper. Make sure to bring some! I LOVED the hike around the lake!!
Important: if you are coming from the south (John Day, etc.) Google Maps will try to take you down Greenhorn Road. This is a bone rattling 30+ miles down an unpaved mountain road. Go through Sumpter/Granite as an alternative paved route. Rating a little low because some of the RV capable sites are not level and are basically pull up parking.
Absolutely beautiful lake with everything an outdoorsman would want. The fishing was amazing, hiking superb, water clean and clear, with blue skies. Camp sites were well maintained and clean. Only downside was lack of water so be sure to bring plenty. The osprey nest was so cool as well as all of the wild life. The hike around the lake takes less then 2 hours and is about 3 miles and well worth it.
So much more room than most campgrounds. Lakefront camping. Such a great place.
