North Sand Hills Recreation Management Area

We stayed at a camp site at 40.879224, -106.217845 , during early June 2025 at the northwestern most part of the area. We were pulling a 28' travel trailer, bro-in-law and another friend were pulling bigger 5th wheel campers. The road in had a ton of washboards and some soft sand the closer to the park. We stopped at the day use (atv unloading area) and scouted before we looked for a campsite and I am glad we did. We got there on a Sunday and had the area to ourselves until Thursday. It got a bit loud after that with some people riding late into the night at the dunes. Tons of ATV trails in the area. Our ATV put on about 130 miles in 5 days. The bathroom by camp were the worst I have ever seen. Very dirty and poo mountain was up to within 2 feet of the dirt chute. Nice area though.

If what you like about riding is the physical thrill - I'm thinking of myself as a kid - then you'll find North Sand Hills to be heaven on earth. What I really enjoy now is exploring, and you can fully explore this place in a couple of hours. But (and it's a huge BUT) there's a connection to the adjacent Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, and there you can ride for days. We mainly used North Sand Hills as a staging area to ride in the national forest. We LOVED riding in Medicine Bow-Routt, but that's not what's being reviewed here. There was a lot of signage to read when entering North Sand Hills, and we read it all, but if the basic question "where is it okay to park?" was answered, we missed it. Definitely a must if you do any offroading! Paddle tires are a must. Bring extra food and water, because you will want to stay a few extra days. Dispersed camping with valt toilets.

Drove 770 miles (about 12 hours) to ride here. My best advice? Split the difference between the best and worst reviews on here. I think the riding is amazing and would rate the mountain trails as difficult. My wife could ride them but they were not enjoyable to her. If you stay on the low trail on the "mountain side" of government creek, it's easier and a variety of terrain. The dune trails are all whooped out and that gets old pretty quick. The dunes are amazing but if you haven't rode sand before, it's power robbing. As you know, there are closures happening and the maintenance is minimal. The pit toilets are pretty gross. I liked this place. Very beautiful nature. Good place for enduro. Lots of trails. You can ride on the sand or go to the mountains. The only negative here is mosquitoes, take a spray.
