Dry camp along the San Juan River, just below the Mexican Hat. Beautiful views. Free. Great cell service. No bathrooms.
There is very little here other than a place to camp with access to the San Juan River and is best for self-contained campers. You pay for your campsite on their website and the cost is $24.00 with the service fee and tax. Just follow the signs along the dirt/gravel road off U.S. Highway 163. There are campsites for vehicles under 75 feet and larger RVs want to keep right at the “Y” as the road to the river is steep and bumpy.
Cool area where you can actually get down to the San Juan River. But... there is nothing there. Someone wants $18 to camp in a dust bowl. Better off going to Gooseneck State Park for $10 and an incredible view. Also, it seems Mexican Hat Rocks Camp is trying to claim all the area, while their signs only point to right (south) side of the road. Seems to be a lot of free space that they don't own, but want you to pay them for it. Move on.
I camped here in late April 2024. What a great spot. No services are available on site. Down by the river is such a great spot. Not recommended for rigs over 20', IMO. It was windy during my stay, which kicked up some dust. I would stay here again.
It was ABSOLUTELY worth it to camp here. It's technically private ground and the owners have asked folks to pay to use it (to help maintain the property) - you can find that online via "hip camp" which is basically the AirBnB of camp sites. Despite just a tiny bit of light pollution, there were still thousands of stars visible at night, and it was so peaceful to listen to the critters by the San Juan river at night. No bathrooms, so pack in / pack out please! I can highly recommend this campsite!!
