I was there mid October 2025 This campground in in the New River Gorge National Park. It was really nice, and free which was awesome! It was very open, I had mixed emotions about that, it led to no privacy and at night was a bit eerie. The picnic tables are SO far from the firepits at the sights, we were constantly carrying things back and forwards, then inbetween the two there is a charcoal grill. The picnic table is a round metal table with 4 benches. It will not work for your traditional picnic table covers and it cannot be moved around your site as it is cemented in which sucked. However, it was very clean. There was a few vaulted bathrooms. One was closed, the other smelled horrible, there was no signs to keep the lids down which prevents the smell. Plus ran out of toilet paper in

October is a good cooler month to stay here. Great for your solar panels, but the summer heat would be tough, not going to lie. The first night I saw a beautiful sight of the train engine headlights coming into the valley. They come back and forth a few times a night and sounds like they're out of control until you get used to them. Lol

This is a great free campsite alongside the New River. It's around an hour's drive to the furthest parts of New River Gorge NP. Just be aware that there aren't many accommodations. The nearest gas and grocery is at least 20 minutes away and the site itself only has vault toilets. There isn't much shade and the site cools off just fine in the evening so that you can sleep, but is very very hot during the day....and those vault toilets get very smelly! Also be aware that a train track runs alongside the campground, and trains run through at least two or three times during the night. This is a great little site if you plan to spend most of your day away from camp, or if you bring a kayak/swimming attire to spend the day in the water. It's not a great sit-around-camp all day site.

Loved this campground especially since it’s free! Warning: the train is super loud and passes a couple times throughout the night. Whoever used campsite 1 before us left a bunch of beers and cigarette butts in the fireplace which was frustrating. We cleaned up some of the trash but didn’t have enough room to take it all.

Another one of America’s great hidden gem free campgrounds. Off the beaten path, this spot has vaulted bathrooms, fire rings and BBQs at each site, and a bonus rushing river you could swim in if you wanted or collect non-potable water from. We went for a walk next to the train tracks that run alongside the grounds. 2 trains came thru during the night. They may have been loud, but we couldn’t hear anything over the torrential lightning and rain storm we encountered. It was wet, windy, and quite fun to sleep in (dry thankfully).
