McClendon Spring Campground

decent spot. it never closes so no worries there. ideal if you need a spot to spend the night on your road trip since it’s so close to the highway. several other places to camp along the dirt road near the campground if you wanted to be away from anyone or wanted a more open view. pit toilet isn’t locked. there’s a decent pizza place and restaurant in the town of Malta nearby.

Small, not sure, I would stay here. In the height of the summer, the stagnant water is full of skippers and skeeter. The big site on the right when you first arrive at the sign would be good for a large group with many trailers and tents. But again, in August, when we visited, it was nice, but there would be lots of bugs. Well, off the beaten path, about 20+ minutes from the main road. It's under the R on the mountain. Spring and fall may be a better time to visit.

This is a beautiful place to camp! There's multiple sites where you can set up camp (I think 5) and you get such a beautiful view from the biggest site. The only downside to this experience is that the dirt road that leads to this campground is NOT made for cars that have a lower body! It's insanely uneven, due to really deep potholes (picture attached). We somehow got our car through there without ruining the bottom of it. It's a great place otherwise.

old beer cans left behind but beautiful site. drove in fine with AWD but it takes longer to get here than google maps says.

Small campground (4-5) sites. Tent camping was a little challenging but we made due. Very nice landscape and peaceful. We said on a Tuesday ad there were 4 campers. Pit toilet was a welcome addition to free BLM camping.
