Matfield Station is a charming and unique place to stay in the middle of the Flint Hills. The bunkhouse is easy to find and get to, surrounded by natural beauty, and sits just along the train tracks. You can watch the trains go by several times a day--they don't blow their horns so the sound isn't disturbing, rather just a rumbling as the train passes by. If it bothers you--earplugs are provided--but we enjoyed this unique feature. The bunkhouse itself is comfortable, clean and nicely updated, while keeping the unusual features that make this such a wonderful place to stay--shelves with books about various natural interests, a map of the area, a hook placed by the door, little extras in the kitchen that provide just what you need to make a meal or morning coffee. We stay at Matfield Station and enjoyed the calm serenity of the Flit Hills. The three casitas provide wonderful accommodations for a short stay or an extended visit to this enchanting part of Kansas. The casitas have full kitchens and are heated and air conditioned. This original railroad bunkhouse does sit a very short distance from an active railroad, so there is some periodic train noise. The good news is the train whistles are not used in the area!||||Wonderfully restful retreat with a budding arts scene in the community of Matfield Green.

I must admit I was worried when I read about the nearby train tracks. But it was more soothing than a disturbance. And it was a kick getting the engineer to toot their whistles and wave at us as they went by. || I went with my daughter and her husband. We enjoyed an outside breakfast and witnessed a most beautiful sunset. If you want peace and quiet this place is for you. The accommodations were more that adequate. We took full advantage of the galley kitchen. The porch on the east side and the patio on the west side enabled us to view both sunsets and sunrises. It was lovely. I even painted "plein aire"!

The summer of 2015, My family and I were searching for a quaint, quiet and peaceful place to spend the weekend of my birthday, I chose Matfield Station because it appeared to fit these requirements. I couldn't have been more disappointed upon my arrival. The main rooms and bathroom appeared like they hadn't been cleaned in months. There were large amounts of dust on tables and chairs. Not to mention it was close to impossible to sleep due to the loud trains that passed by frequently throughout the night. Overall, I would consider that weekend to be very uncomfortable and unpleasant.
