Little Squaw Resort

This family owned and operated resort is celebrating their 90th year! The grounds are well kept and clean. Clearly visitor care about keeping this rustic location pristine. The cabins are original but updated with many (not all) modern conveniences. The resort is aptly named after the creek it is located next to. The forest land around the resort was destroyed by the Papoose Fire of 2013 but is recovering with many Aspens approximately 7 - 8 feet. Great location to unplug, hike, and fish.

It is a matter of deep regret that what was once unspoiled and open to all—the fair and public lands—has been taken, as though belonging to but a privileged few. That such a place should bear the name Little Squaw, a term both derogatory and grievously disrespectful to Native peoples, is a mark not only of ignorance, but of profound insensitivity. One can scarcely imagine a greater affront. It is, in every sense, a shameful trespass—upon the land, and upon the dignity of those to whom it rightly holds meaning.

9+ miles from the pavement (149) on the north edge of the Weminuche Wilderness this is away from the hustle and bustle. From the porch of our cabin we saw as many mule deer and moose as people. This was my first time here. Count me among the yearly visitors as I am already looking forward to next June.

If you want to see the milky way in the middle of the night, come here. If you want to make s'mores by the campfire, come here. If you want to escape it all - internet, cell signal, noise, traffic - come here. If you want to fish for trout at Rio Grande, come here. Well worth the drive from Denver - just remember to reserve early. They have a very small number of cabins, and most are taken every year by repeat customers.

A slice of heaven nestled next to the head waters of the Rio Grande. No TV and No Cell Phone, just mother nature and time. A simple and quiet place to get away, to recharge and remember what is really important in life.
