HI San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf Hostel

Upside: Easily one of the best hostel locations: safe area, stunning views of the city, Alcatraz, & Golden Gate. Good amenities, when they’re open. The People were great and front staff was friendly & helpful. It was affordably priced. Downsides: Not sure if there was no Central Air in my room or if it was broken? Very hot. Couldn’t touch the windows thanks to a confrontational guest who, claiming a health condition, wouldn’t allow anyone to touch them. Cleaning staff took it upon themselves to move my bag of properly labeled food into the “free” refrigerator, which resulted in some of my items vanishing. I was stunned by the beauty of the setting of this hostel. It is at the very end of Fisherman’s Wharf. It is not a close walk to any restaurants or shopping, but the hostel has gorgeous views of both the city and San Francisco Bay. The other thing to know about the location is that if you approach it from Fisherman’s Wharf (say, by taking the F trolley to Fisherman’s Wharf from downtown), there is not only a substantial walk awaiting you from the end of the trolley line, but also a huge, and hugely steep hill to traverse to reach the hostel. Hills are everywhere in San Francisco, but this is one impressively long and steep hill. | While staying at the hostel, you will probably want to cook at least some meals because of restaurant prices in San Francisco. had a really pleasant stay at HI San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf Hostel. The location is excellent — close to Fisherman’s Wharf, public transport, and many of San Francisco’s main attractions. It’s easy to explore the city from here, whether on foot or by cable car. The hostel itself is clean, well organized, and feels safe. The staff are friendly, helpful, and always ready to give tips about the city. The common areas are cozy and perfect for meeting other travelers, which creates a very welcoming, international atmosphere. The rooms and beds are comfortable for a hostel, and everything you need for a short or longer stay is provided. Overall, it’s a great value for money in an otherwise expensive city. Location and views are great but I didn’t have a great stay there for several reasons.First, the beds in the dorms are not super comfortable and the upper beds are dangerous to climb especially during the night in the dark. I feel that if the hostel cared about guests’ safety, they would change them. Second, one of the workers at the front desk seemed like he didn’t want to be there or he didn’t want guests to come… which gave a bad first impression. Third, I am unsure as to the cleanliness of the blue covers on the bed. I woke up with insect bites on my legs and back… maybe bed bugs?

The location is truly top tier. I got the private room and if you stood on the far side of it you could see part of the golden gate bridge. It's one of the best views you'll get for this price in the entire city. Admittedly, the location really makes this location because compared to other hostels; the bathrooms aren't as nice as others in the city as the showers are in a gym configuration with no tables to put your clean clothes. There's also no cooling in the rooms though you could just open a window most nights and that should solve any issues.
