They used OSB board for floor and it swells when exposed to moisture. Be careful of putting your air mattress on it.
This shelter is one of the original AT shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939. It is a modest three sided stone shelter with a tin roof. The platform was rebuilt in 2023 and a bear proof food box was added. This is one of 10 shelters maintained by the Carolina Mountain Club.
This place while great because it kept me out of the rain and elevated could really use some love. Walking in there is food trash, cigarette cartons, and glass jars all around the sight as well as random blankets and whole changes of cloths and shoes left in the rain outside the shelter. To complete this, there were a million spider webs and one spider so big i had to take a picture of it! If you're staying here for one night its doable, and if you can tent here that's preferred but at the end of the day I'm dry!
This shelter is located just off a 0.2 mile side trail from the Appalachian Trail. This is a small, six-person shelter with a privy, food hang cables, a spring, and plenty of tent space.
One of the best shelter areas on the AT. Plenty of trees for hammocks and some great tent sites on the blue blaze to water.
