Customer Reviews
The Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas, is a refined West Texas retreat that balances historic character with understated luxury. The property blends adobe architecture, desert landscaping, and thoughtfully restored 1920s charm with modern comforts. Rooms are well-appointed, quiet, and comfortable—ideal after a long day exploring Big Bend National Park. The on-site 12 Gage Restaurant consistently delivers excellent food and service. The landscaped courtyard and pool area provide a relaxed, intimate atmosphere that fits the surrounding desert landscape. Service is attentive without being intrusive. If you’re looking for a distinctive, upscale base for exploring the region, the Gage Hotel is an exceptional choice.
The rooms have no tv. Owners request? We heard several other couples complain and laugh about that at the hotels restaurant. We like having the choice of wether we watch tv or not. There is a minimal breakfast offered at the hotel desk area. Muffin and coffee. Didn’t see any other options in town. The bed was comfortable, along with the pillows.
Very cool place that almost totally hits the mark. Loved the décor; cozy lobby area to read by the fire and pet the house cat; variety of outside spaces to enjoy; room in Los Portales courtyard was clean and comfy; Gage Gardens makes for a great stroll and photo backdrop. We were there NYE and the night before and the restaurant and bar were overwhelmed (ie. frantic) and being as those were the only places open in town to eat it was a little rough. We saw a lot of people/families rolling into The Gage after a day at Big Bend NP ready to take a load off and get some food only to be told they’re essentially out of luck and probably had to drive to Alpine for dinner. I get that it must be difficult to staff and stock a place like that but I would think when management knows that the property
⭐️⭐️ (2/5)||||I stayed at the Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas for three nights, and this is my honest takeaway.||||Yes, this property is on the National Register of Historic Places, and yes, it’s old—a two-story original structure with multiple add-ons over the past 60–70+ years. However, the hotel markets itself as historic, charming, unique, and upscale, and unfortunately, it simply doesn’t deliver on that promise.||||Overall, the property felt very underwhelming. While many people describe it as charming and quaint, I personally did not see that. Instead, it felt rustic to the point of worn-out. The rooms were not well sealed—dust from the nearby desert roads clearly made its way inside. The overall cleanliness was questionable, from the room itself to the sheets, which didn’t feel freshl
This is a magnificent property. If you want to relax and completely turn off, this is the place to go. The rooms, the food, the staff were all excellent. No TV in the rooms made it nice to relax. There is not alot to do in the town, but its a great place to stay.
