Review is for just the restaurant/bar (we haven't stayed in the rooms). FANTASTIC place for a great dinner! We visited on a chilly, blustery Halloween, sweaters in hand...and were immediately greeted by multiple warm fireplaces and warmly welcoming staff. It's impossible to imagine a cozier spot for a romantic dinner, reminiscent of a 19th-century English inn (but with up-to-date conveniences). The cocktails were good, and the dinner delicious - a nicely limited menu with excellence in every element (pro tip: try the short ribs!). Our hats are off to the proprietors (Rachelle & her husband) and the owners for an exceptional evening - and for providing an important destination in one of my favorite towns in all of New England.
Delightful renovated rustic inn block and a half from NY side of Lake Champlain. Extremely hard working married couple own and operate with humble flair. . Remote but not isolated. Great bar and restaurant open three nights a week. Large handcrafted fire pit with cool custom seating. Tommy is former winemaker- very good list. Charming all around but the people really make the place after all!
Stayed at the Inn in early September this year for cycling trip. I have stayed at this Inn several times over the years. Could have saved money by staying at our old family cabin on Lake Champlain but made the choice the stay at Essex Inn because is very comfortable. The Inn is well managed by Rachelle who has the Inn in perfect condition. Room as well appointed with all of comforts expected at a property with this price range. Essex is an old, but restored New England type of town, though New York State is not consider New England. The Inn has a restored small restaurant and pub open a few days per week. She provides a nice breakfast with night before ordered sandwiches. Beds are great. Very quiet location and next to Lake Champlain ferry for quick trips to Vermont. This is a
I didn’t actually get to stay here due to a family emergency - this review is due to the above and beyond kindness in their response when I had to cancel my reservation. I hope to be able to reschedule my trip at some point and stay here in the future.
How do you make a beautifully restored and appointed landmark hotel in a picturesque town on the shore of Lake Champlain even better? During my 3-week stay, it was the kind, focused, thoughtful energy of the hosts that turned this beautiful building into a place that felt like home. Rachelle and Tommy were somehow able be everywhere and do everything to keep the hotel, a fine restaurant and bar humming, while still always having time to chat and be sure I had everything I needed. Altogether, the lake, the town, the inn, and careful assistance made for a perfect vacation. Highly recommended!
