Very busy area, the roads are wasboards. More traffic than I ever expected. Lots of dust. The donkeys are everywhere, loud but so fun to watch. The nights are quiet and sunrise is beautiful! Occasional jets from the air force base makes the donkeys and coyotes go nuts for a few minutes, I still love hearing them. All in all a pretty good spot. Exploring the back roads is rough going, but the scenery is some of the best I've ever seen! The saguaro get more plentiful the further back you go. Stunning scenery!
Plenty of places to park for free. It's BLM, so no services or amenities. It seems to be a gathering place for the off-roaders to run their ATVs and dune buggies. The roads are pretty rutted up and bumpy, so getting to a site can be an adventure. When it rains, the desert parking spots become a real mud pit. We saw wild Burros. There are some good hikes. The real downside is the amount of garbage that people have left everywhere. Please pack out what you bring in, and maybe an extra garbage bag or two full. There are no places to get rid of garbage, or to dump your grey and black tanks in that section of the state, so be prepared for that.
Very nice roads were alot smoother then I expected them to be. Definitely busy with atvs but all the riders are extremely respectful. Very quiet for as many people out here. Definitely will return. Almost forgot did see some wild burritos.
Beautiful desert landscape. 4 wheel drive is a must for anything beyond the main dirt road. Swimming is accessible on some coves, but would be best suited for adventurous types. Donkeys everywhere! So cool!
Just over 4 miles of washboard gravel road at about 5-10mph. We arrived just after dark on a Saturday night in early March. Lots of folks already there partying. Still had an easy time finding a spot to set up for our one night stay. The low-key partying and generators stopped about 0100. The rest of the night was peaceful and quiet except for the occasional burro calling out in the dark. The off-road vehicles, generators, and a powered parachute were up with the sunrise. The camp spot is deeply rutted, which reveals conditions when it's been raining. I wouldn't even try it until it's been dry for a few days. It was interesting to see the Saguaros with a lake in the background! Would likely stay again if going for more than one night next time. But it's a long way to go on a primitive r
