Bearhead Hammock Recreational Area

I do love this little spot. The sites are always so well maintained and despite plenty of trees for shade, it is easy to maneuver around through (33' forest river travel trailer). However, the front entrance is not as the potholes are dramatic and the trees will kiss your rig on your way to the clearing. It is also only a one lane, narrow road in, with limited visibility ahead and a steep embankment on either side. I would hate to have to figure that one out if someone was trying to leave at the same time you were coming in! It loses a star for that, otherwise it would've been a 5 star as far as a primitive camping site goes. It's got good vibes, unlike most of my experiences on the road so far.

We hiked some of the many trails and forest service roads. This is obviously a very popular horse area. Hitching posts abundant at the trailhead and the campground actually has four mini corrals for horses if you are camping overnight. There are two huge abandoned quarries that are right alongside the trail but virtually invisible because of tree growth. We will be back to explore these quarries. Lots of logging currently so some of the forest is mostly gone but still lots of old Florida forest with huge live oaks.

Nice primitive camping, we'll be back again.

Folkow the blue markers. Very nice trail. Saw deer and lots of small wildlife.

What a great spot! We are camping here for one night in a camper van and the peace and quiet and views are amazing. Kind of wish we were staying longer.
