Assembly Inn

The staff were excellent and location was great. The Assembly Inn is stone, and was built a long time ago. They have done upgrades, but think of it as staying in a stone castle...a little cold and damp. It was raining all week we were there, so there is that. The food was very good, and the atmosphere was chsrming Beautiful views. Black Mountain is a cute little town with ice cream and artisans, what's not to love?

I was at Montreat for a week long Road Scholar program. I really wanted to love the Assembly Inn. The building is beautiful and the staff was very friendly. However the twin beds in my room were very uncomfortable, with very thick, rock hard pillows. There were no vegetarian protein offerings on the buffet line 3 of the 5 nights I stayed. I stepped into the kitchen and they did give me single serve packets of peanut butter. The lunches had at least one vegetarian offering each day and were by far the best meal. Breakfasts were horrible…cold eggs and dry biscuits were the usual offerings. The Inn is very remote so without a car you can’t explore the community…no public transportation offerings.

Very wonderful place to visit. Highly recommend however, I do hope they do something about the dust. Air filters are needed. My only criticism. Go anyways, it feels enchanted.

The location and the views are idyllic. The religious vibe is a little heavy for my taste even though they are careful about not discriminating against non-Presbyterians. The people are extremely nice but there are very few of them, so they don't do much for you. For example, housekeeping service is simply not available at all. One buses one's own table, removes one's own trash, stocks one's own essentials and towels, etc. The meals are included but they are about as spectacular as you'd expect from a buffet-style sort of situation. Not terrible, but nothing to write home about. The bathrooms are pretty atrocious. Skinny closet-sized spaces with a tub and a toilet; knees bonk the wall and the bath when seated. Stone mansion, quiet and peaceful. Attentive desk staff, comfortable room with a huge window. The lobby was large, many porches to view the calm lake across the road. The parking was convenient with some shade. Meals were quick self-service buffet style, clear your own dishes and spacious dining room seating. Grounds were beautiful and litter free.
